Alyssa Murray

Hometown: Kansas City, Kansas

Major: Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (Major) & Human Biology (Minor)

Three things I love to do at Stanford outside of class: skateboard around in the sun with a bluephoria yerba mate in hand (i am scared of bikes) & eat açaí bowls at town and country for breakfast, lunch, and dinner & playing games at Black Student Union meetings

I could talk all day about: what it looks like to practice intentional community building and why communities are meaningful to you & student organizing and activism on campus & Black literature, poetry, magical realism, and the meaning lost in translated works & how archives are so freaking cool & no talking just play me in Bananagrams

I would love to connect with guests who work in fields related to: student activism and youth political education & healthcare policy and access & ethnography and social research & non-profit and community-based work & business for social good

Biosketch: After working camp in 2022 as an Ospreys counselor and filling in for a few week this past summer as a Marmots counselor, Alyssa could not be more excited to return to camp for her ~basically~ THIRD SUMMER with THE TEENS ! From making quesadillas and sleeping under the stars on overnight to begrudgingly learning to love cold morning lake jumps to leading book discussions on Black literature with adult guests, she is beyond ready to make more life-long memories and continue to uplift and celebrate staff and guests of color this year as a Coordinator for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CDEI) on the Interview Committee (ICOM). Outside of the Camp community, Alyssa was Co-President of the Black Student Union this year, is deeply involved in student organizing work and Black political action efforts on campus, goes on many hikes and beach days with friends, works on various projects for educational equity and engaging youth voters, and plays not as much soccer as she wishes her schedule allowed for. In her studies, Alyssa is passionate about healthcare equity for women of color, formerly incarcerated women's health outcomes and abolition, youth political education and engagement, non-traditional knowledge systems and ways of communal learning outside of academia, how embracing narratives of excellence can be harmful to marginalized communities, and the importance of community building and rest as liberatory practices. She loves learning about things other people are passionate about and why, especially as they pertain to social justice issues, and would loOooOoOve to grab a meal with you this summer !
