Katherine Lai

Hometown: Mountain View, CA

Major: Biology with a focus on Ecology, Evolution, and Environment (with a particular interest in food systems)!

Three things I love to do at Stanford outside of class: Make tomato sandwiches and fries from scratch in the Columbae kitchen with friends, teach creative writing to second graders and then perform their stories back to them and to Stanford students, and play volleyball with my friends in the beautiful sun!

I could talk all day about: FOOD!! Anything related to food systems (be it food justice, soils, agriculture, earthworms, ecology, cooking, sharing food with loved ones, food as culture). The list is endless and I will always be down to talk about it with anyone! The people I love and how grateful I am for every one of my relationships with them! To that point, I could talk about what family and community mean to me all day! Education and learning -- I love talking about teachers (both professors and other students alike) who have had a huge impact on me and my learning! Imagination and the power of telling stories about how we want to live and how we want the future to look! My love for Jasper Ridge at Stanford!

I would love to connect with guests who work in fields related to: Sustainable Food Systems / Agriculture, Environmental Justice, Social Justice more broadly, Ecology, Science Communication, Education, Restorative & Transformative Justice

Biosketch: Katherine is beyond excited to be returning this summer to the most beautiful lake with the most beautiful people!! Camp has gifted Katherine one of the most special communities she’s ever been part of, one that celebrates and loves every part of you and makes you feel like you sincerely belong. She can’t think of anything she’d want more than to give back to this community that has given her so much. This summer, she looks forward to creating moments and spaces of belonging for staph and guest alike, to share in the magic of Camp. A magic that even makes washing dishes and cleaning bathrooms feel oh so special. She also can’t wait to share in the joy of learning new things, and is so so excited to talk to you about the world that lies beneath our feet (in the soil)!! And she hopes that by the end of the summer, all the kids will have their hands 6 inches deep in the soil planting seeds that will grow for the rest of their time at Camp. She’s grateful you’ve read this far and cannot wait to meet you!!
